A copper coloured classic

A copper coloured classic

Synonymous with pub firesides, fresh sea air and the distant sound of crashing waves, our bitter and our hometown are so intertwined that a call of, ‘Southwold,’ sings out from every bar. Its branding depicts local icon, Southwold Jack, highlighting our sense of place. This small wooden figure stands guard on the brewery wall and is based on an original ‘Clock Jack’, in nearby St Edmunds Church. Brewed with local barley from Holkham in North Norfolk, Southwold also receives a late dose of Fuggles hops. First sold commercially in 1871 in Kent, the year before Adnams was founded, Fuggles are revered as the classic English aroma hop. Their careful selection has helped us maintain continuity over the years. Another enduring element is our in-house yeast, which we’ve used since the 1940s. It makes a beer uniquely Adnams, and breathes life, as well as flavour into Southwold.
A copper coloured classic
  • The Telegraph

A gentle pairing for flatbreads, with not too strong New World hop character, but something to pull forward that nutty buckwheat taste. The light, grassy aroma from English Fuggles hops will elevate the flavours while refreshing your palate.

Description

Southwold Bitter is authentic and full of character, just like its namesake – our hometown on the Suffolk coast. Copper-coloured and late-hopped with Fuggles, its distinctive, thirst-quenching, herbal hoppiness provides a genuine English bitter experience.

How does it taste

Biscuity malts and light caramelised toffee notes balance the classic English hop character from the addition of Fuggles hops. They are added late in the brewing process, to maintain their wonderful grassy, almost minty, herbal aromas and provide a long, lingering, resinous hoppiness on the palate.

A good all rounder.

An excellent everyday beer with no vices, well balanced and no sour taste of unripe grapefruit.

One for all and all for one.

Southwold Bitter is a beer that I find anyone is happy to drink . With so much choice out there stocking this that and something else for when friends call round is a real pain . On top of that just the name Adnams seems to seal the deal so to speak so keeps everyone happy and my life simple .
