A truly stunning, classic white Rioja

A truly stunning, classic white Rioja

Bodegas de la Marquesa was established in the second half of the nineteenth century after the Marquis of Solana had a conversation with Bordeaux winemaker Jean Pinaud about the benefits of ageing wines. Today, the winery remains in the family, and is managed by the Marquis’ great-grandson, Juan Pablo de Simón. Valserrano are their most renowned wines. The vines, with an average age of 40 years old, are situated in Villabuena, towards the banks of the river Ebro in the south of Rioja.

Description

This Gran Reserva Rioja Blanco is classic white Rioja, and the 2017 is truly stunning. It’s full-bodied with obvious oak influence, having spent 18 months ageing in barrel followed by at least two and a half more years in bottle before release. Despite its time in oak, it is still youthful with lemony fruit behind the rich grilled marzipan notes, a hint of hazelnut and a long, rich, mineral finish – this is such good value for a wine of this quality. When pairing with food, white Rioja and roast pork are a match made in heaven.

How does it taste

Classic white Rioja with obvious oak influence and notes of citrus fruits, nuts and marzipan. Smooth and rounded, with a long persistent finish.
