traditional winter warmer

traditional winter warmer

Traditionally brewed in the winter months, the brewing team look forward to making Old Ale, just as much as our customers look forward to drinking it. Old Ale is a term traditionally applied to strong, dark, malty beers and has been known to describe bottle conditioned ‘stock ales,’ or ‘keeping ales,’ which were beers held in a pub or brewery to mature and age. Historically, old ales were served as a ‘boost’ to mild ales and were supplemented according to taste. This practice began in pubs and was later picked up by breweries who stored and sometimes blended beers to add some ‘old’ character to the new. Breweries such as Adnams produced a lighter style of old ale, almost replicating the flavours customers were trying to achieve when they took the time to blend their own at the bar. They offer a tantalising taste of the past.

Description

Old Ale is based on one of Adnams' oldest beer recipes, dating back to 1890. This winter warmer is brewed with East Anglian Pale Ale malt; Crystal malted barley, and First Gold hops, and has flavours of red fruit, roasted grains, and a hint of caramel. It is eagerly anticipated with the change in the seasons and has that warming fireside glow about it. Each mini keg contains around 8 pints, or 5 litres, of delicious award-winning beer. They are perfect for parties or celebratory gatherings. They are ready to use immediately and will last up to four days once opened, if resealed after each use.

How does it taste

Old Ale’s style is akin to a mild, so hops play second fiddle to the malt. You’ll find rich aromas of caramel and nutty chocolate, which also come through on the palate along with hints of liquorice and red fruits. This is all balanced by a smooth bitterness that cleanses the palate and makes room for the next sip.

First time for Old ale

This is the first time I've tried the Old ale and found it to be a tasty and smooth easy drinking beer. It was served from my beer dispenser and was very much as good as a pub ale. Will definitely be buying more.
