Kaapzicht, Skraalhans Pinotage

Kaapzicht, Skraalhans Pinotage

In 1946 Major David Steytler purchased a farm in the idyllic hills of Bottelary, planting tobacco, wheat, and vegetables. It wasn’t until 1959 that Pinotage was planted, which slowly took precedence, and by 1968 grape were solely planted on the farm. Fourth generation, Danie Jnr Steytler manages the estate. Having made wine in Italy, Greece, Germany, Saint-Emillion, New Zealand, Napa Valley and Sweden Danie Jnr returned to the family estate in South Africa. An expert in his field, in 2009 he wins Decanter’s best red wine in the world for the Steytler Pinotage 2006. The first of many awards. Today Danie Jnr’s children help him in the vineyard and winery, gaining the experience needed to one day manage the estate themselves.

Description

This is a modern style of Pinotage: light, fruity, and elegant. Juicy cherries and mulberries dominate the nose, which is complement the synonymous flavours of Pinotage on the palate: smoky, meaty, and earthy. 10 months ageing in old oak barrels has softened the tannins without adding any obvious oak characters, whilst a fresh acidity reinforces the wine’s fruitiness, resulting in an elegant finish. Pair with sticky Chinese pork, rice and stir-fried greens.

How does it taste

Bright red fruits complement the synonymous flavours of Pinotage: smoky, meaty, and earthy.
