A mother and son duo

A mother and son duo

Based in Sillery, at the foot of the Montagne de Reims, is Champagne Virginie T. The daughter of Claude Taittinger, of champagne house Taittinger, and the granddaughter of Piper-Heidsieck’s owners, it was only natural that Virginie should one day own her own champagne house. In 1986 Virginie joined her father at Taittinger, where she worked for 20 years. It was here, and working in the Loire Valley and California, that she learnt her craft, before setting up on her own in 2006. Today, Virginie is joined by her son Ferdinand. The focus at Champagne Virginie T. is on Pinot Noir. 85% of grapes come from classified Premiers & Grands Crus sites, and all wines undergo extended bottle age of at least seven years before release.

A blend of premier and grand cru vineyards and vintages – the oldest being 2010 – this is the classic style of Virginie T. There are notes of stewed apples and plums, and poached pears that are complemented by flavours of hazelnut and baking spices. Pinot Noir dominates, making up 70% of the blend, adding a rich, creamy texture that is balance with a bright mineral finish, which is satisfying long, a result of 7 years bottle ageing before release. Pair with mushroom risotto, or 24 month old Comté to really elevate your cheese course.

How does it taste

Notes of stewed fruits and nuts. It is both rich and fresh, with a bright mineral finish that lasts and lasts.
