A prized Saint Joseph Grower

A prized Saint Joseph Grower

Having grown up in vineyards, Pierre Gaillard's passion for winemaking developed at just 12 years old. He went on to study oenology at Montpelier and then went to work in Côte Rôtie where he embraced the wines and the northern Rhône Valley, which lead to his first purchase in 1981. This was of the historical vineyard, Clos de Cuminaille, which is situated on some of the steepest slopes in the region. Today, Pierre has dedicated 20 out of 25 hectares to growing Syrah grapes and is considered one of the top growers in Saint Joseph. When he’s not tending to his vines in Saint Joseph, Pierre can be found in his family’s vineyards in Faugères and Banyuls.

Description

Made from grapes planted in 1981, this is a highly elegant and complex Syrah. It has a wonderful bouquet of fresh black and red fruits that develop into notes of spices and chocolate with a subtle smoky note. On the palate, the wine is fresh with berried fruit, red pear and a hint of peppery spice. After 18 months ageing in oak barrels, tannins are soft and persistent, complemented by a juicy, violet-inflected finish. Pairs perfectly with grilled steak.

How does it taste
