Rustenberg has a wine growing history dating back to 1682 and has been making wine uninterrupted since 1892, an impressive 238 years. The estate is situated in the foothills of Simonsberg Mountain in Stellenbosch, with vineyards positioned off the valley floor and in the mountains. It was in 1941 that current owners Peter and Pamela Barlow bought Rustenberg. Since then, their son Simon took over the running of the farm in 1987 and Simon’s son, Murray, joined the family business in 2012. Today Rustenberg is one of the most respected and renowned estates in South Africa and beyond.

Description

Melot plays a lead role at Rustenberg, where the wines tend to be bigger and bolder in body and are structured to have excellent aging potential. The 2022 vintage is no different, with rich aromas of blackberries, cassis, and dark chocolate. These notes follow onto the palate, which is smooth with well-rounded yet slightly grippy tannins (a result of having spent 15 months ageing in French oak barrels). Balanced by a freshness on the finish, making this wine both ideal for drinking now or in a few years’ time. Chinese dishes rich with umami and mushrooms are a great match to Rustenberg’s Merlot.

How does it taste

Aromas of blackberry, cassis, and dark chocolate follow through onto a smooth palate. The tannins are rounded with a slight grip, balanced by a fresh finish.
