A rising star winemaker from Northern Spain

A rising star winemaker from Northern Spain

Francisco Barona’s father, grandfather, and great grandfather were vine growers, so it was only natural for Francisco to study winemaking in Bordeaux, followed by harvests in France, the USA and South Africa. Returning home to Ribera del Duero, northern Spain, in 2010 he purchased his first vineyard at the age of just 25. Today, Francisco has 48 hectares of very old vines planted in Roa, La Horra, Anguix, La Aguilera and Boada de Roa. Whilst neither organic nor biodynamic by certification, Francisco runs his vineyards on holistic principles and follows lunar influences, just as previous generations did. Very little sulphur or copper is used, and the only intervention comes in August when Francisco removes excess bunches from the vines to ensure maximum ripeness.

Description

An interesting blend of Tinto Fino, Grenache, and Albillo, a white grape variety, which brings freshness to this powerful Ribera del Duero. A burst of wild forest fruits, blackberry, raspberry and blueberry on the nose are spiced by cinnamon and vanilla on the palate. Notes of violets, dark chocolate and coffee add further complexity, a result of 12 months in new French oak barrels. Rich tannins are balanced by fresh acidity and a minerality on the finish. Just as the Spanish would, pair this wine with roasted lamb and grilled vegetables, such as aubergine and squash.

How does it taste

A medley of black, red, and blue berries with spice, mocha, and hints of minerality on the finish. Fresh acidity balances rich tannins.
