Our Head Distiller, John McCarthy tastes a selection of different spirits of various ages, and maturing in a variety of casks, with the aim of finding something extra special for the Distiller's Choice range. Back in 2015, a new spirit made from 100% East Anglian Malted Barley was put directly into a Port cask. It has matured in that cask for seven years, before being singled out by John, and shared in a limited edition run of just 271 bottles. The wine cask has added a real luxuriousness to the spirit and John believes this whisky has really come into its own and is now his favourite release for the range so far.

Description

Adnams Head Distiller, John McCarthy hand-picks special spirits from our cellars for the Distiller's Choice range. A single malt, first fill Port cask whisky stood out to him as having exceptional character - in fact, he thinks it might be his favourite so far. It is available in a limited edition run of just 271 bottles.

How does it taste

You will find indulgent aromas of toasted oak, bananas, and ripe blackberries on the nose. The palate is luxurious, with a brown sugar sweetness, butterscotch, and raisin fruit, balanced by cinnamon and a sprinkling of peppery spice. The finish is long with oaky notes of vanilla and cocoa, and those amazing blackberries again, at the end. To serve, add a similar volume of chilled spring water.

A warm Christmas

A reminder of Christmas past sitting next to a log fire eating sticky pudding. Port, cherry's and hints of spice. Beautiful.

Spur of the moment...

I was in Bury St Edmunds to catch up with an old friend and popped into the Adnams Shop to browse and noticed the Distiller's Choice selection after pondering on a bottle of Spirit of Broadside as the beer is one of my favorites.

I had planned on buying a bottle of the Distiller's Choice Spirit of Broadside, Islay Finish being a 50th anniversary bottling of Broadside, I was then kindly offered a tasting of this and the First Fill Port Cask as at the time they had both still available to try...

Wow, for such a high proof I found it so smooth and really enjoyable to sip - I could easily spend a few evenings devouring it so bought a bottle there and then.

My only minor disappointment was that the bottle isn't supplied boxed or in a tube to store as I have one or two other bottles to finish before I can open this one.

Now... do I still get a bottle of the Spirit of Broadside, Islay Finish?

Poorly packed yet again!

These are premium products but were just loosely packed in a box with no other protection at all. I have complained before about packaging but was ignored.
