We've been cleaning Southwold beach at least three times a year since 2003, and although we've lost count along the way, as we missed a couple and then added in a few more, we reckon we have done over 50!
As part of our regular beach clean programme, now 15 years old, some of our members of staff plus a group of super volunteers, help to spruce up Southwold beach.
Our beach cleans help provide data to Marine Conservation Society who hold statistics on beach litter levels across the UK. Each Beach Clean we do, we collect data on the items found on a 100m stretch of Southwold Beach. This data contributes to the Marine Conservation Society's Beach Watch Survey which records the type and quantity of litter found across the UK.
We've put together our own chart looking at the amount of litter we've been finding since 2013 (the blue line indicates the number of pieces per volunteer/ per 100m). The general trend for Southwold is looking good, but it could be that more and more people are picking up litter as part of their daily routine. However, a downward-trend is definitely positive.
