Sweet & Malty

Bitburger and US brewer Deschutes' friendship began when Deschutes won the ‘Bitburger Challenge’ in the USA in 2019. The task was to brew an especially good German Pilsner, with the winner getting the opportunity to brew with Bitburger. Bitburger and Deschutes share many common values, such as a love of the craft of brewing and a passion for the best ingredients. Together, they decided to brew a triple hopped and naturally cloudy Zwickl beer. Symbolic of their intercontinental brewing friendship, it is brewed in Bitburg in the classic German beer style, but using American Citra and Mosaic aromatic hop varieties as well as Bitburger Siegelhopfen from the Eifel National Park. Zwickelbier, also known as a Zwickel, Zwickl, or Kellerbier, is an unfiltered, naturally cloudy beer that is usually bottled immediately after being stored in the tank. Zwickelbier is now widespread, especially in Bavaria, but actually has its origins in Upper Franconia, where this tasty, spicy beer was brewed and offered primarily in smaller local breweries.

Description

Following the ‘Bitburger Challenge’ to brew a great German Pilsner in the USA, Bitburger has been joined by winning brewers Deschutes on this limited-edition collaboration brew. Dry Hop'd Zwickl is a delicious unfiltered kellerbier that brings American hop varieties and Bitburger’s Siegelhopfen together in a classic German beer style. Enhanced with US hops, this Zwickl-style beer is intriguingly smooth, with an intense fruity hop flavour.

How does it taste

This copper-coloured collaboration is triple hopped with Citra and Mosaic aromatic hop varieties from the Yakima region in the United States, as well as Bitburger Siegelhopfen from the Eifel National Park. The aroma is pleasantly fruity and malty, with subtle lime and lychee notes from the Citra hops, as well as gooseberry and pear from Mosaic. Fruity and full-bodied on first taste, there is a balanced interplay of apricot, peaches and lime and a pleasant bitterness that fades away gently on the palate.
