Pinkney’s Lane, Southwold
Pinkney’s Lane is a basic but well located holiday let which occupies the whole of the first floor above the Adnams Wine Shop, with magnificent views across South Green to Gun Hill and the sea.
Capable of sleeping five (one double bed, a pair of full size bunk beds and a slip bed), Pinkneys Lane flat is furnished with great character and provided with everything you could need; local maps and guidebooks, plenty of holiday reading, board games and a tide table. The walls are hung with charts pictures and photographs of local interest, including mementoes of Southwold’s famous Trinity Fair which still occupies South Green for three days every year.
The building is an interesting one; long narrow, bow fronted and slightly nautical. It was originally the chemist’s shop of Joseph Arthy, who arrived in Southwold in 1825 and who was married on 16th August that year to the delightfully named Mary Anne Perfect. He became a distinguished and much loved figure of the town and his death in 1861 is recorded by a wall memorial in the north aisle of St Edmund’s Church, which describes him as ‘the best and kindest friend’ of ‘the poor of this parish’.
