Adnams style Belgian Abbey Ale – 5.0% abv – November

Abbey Belgian Style Ale

Abbey Belgian Style Ale

We will recreate this beer using a Belgian yeast strain; pilsner malted barley and a mixture of Biscuit, Aromatic, Munich and Honey malts. The hops will be Fuggles and Styrian Goldings. This will be a full-bodied pale gold beer, fruity and spicy aroma and palate and a low bitterness.

Typical examples: Leffe Blonde and Affligem Blond.

The diversity of beer is really appreciated in Belgium. Here tradition and innovation go hand in hand and flavour is king. The abbey ales of Belgium were my first real appreciation that beer could be so different from the norm. Although most abbey ales have lost their monastic links, for beer lovers Belgium is still an enlightening experience.

The Abbey went down very well, so much that we managed to order a second one before the end of November! The members are enjoying it and looking forward to the German Wheat Beer this month… should go on this week!

I have to admit i am really enjoying trying these Adnams world beers.
And the Abbey Ale certainly does not disappoint.
What i really liked about this beer was the wonderful mixture of flavours,
Spice,Honey,Fruit and Malt with a hint of dryness in the finish.
And i was surprised how easy drinking it was for a 5% beer.
    Keep up the good work.

Brilliant Ale – enjoyed every minute of it. I’m not a connoisseur by any stretch of the imagination but i know what i like and this really did hit the spot. A pat on the back for Adnams. Looking forward to December with great anticipation!

    Roger,

Of course you are correct, apologies for the error, we have removed it from the examples.

    Thanks
    Sean

Sorry to be picky, but De Koninck isn’t an Abbey Ale. It’s a classic — THE classic Belgian pale ale — brewed in Antwerp.

Brilliant – can’t wait to try it having lived in Belgium for 5 years and having got through about 165 of their 260+ beers. Didn’t like the fruit beers though so keep to what is “proper” beer! Still think to date that Broadside is your best – but once I try this Abbey beer I might be dissuaded!

  • Fergus

    Thanks for the encouragement.
As with most styles of beer there is a wide range of flavours within it, so what we are really brewing is our interpretation of each style.
I’m not usually a fan of pigeonholing beers into styles but I think it does help to give a guide to what flavours we are aiming for.
    Hope you enjoy them

Richard many thanks for your kind comments, which general area of the UK do live or work in and I will have a look to see if there are any pubs in your area taking this.

I admire your courage in taking this one on. The Belgian Abbey Beers are very different in character so it is hard to talk about a ‘style’ in this context but there is certainly a great deal of interest in these beers.
Hope it goes well. As a member of the British Guild of Beer writers I will review your beer (if I can find it!)

Looking forward to trying it! I think this is a really exciting development and a great way for a brewery like yours to be going.
