Adnams cask conditioned Irish Dry Stout – 4.3% abv – March

Irish Dry Stout

Adnams Irish Dry Stout

Our version uses pale ale malt, roasted barley, flaked barley, wheat and a blend of Crystal, Brown, Amber and Chocolate malts. Hopped with Goldings. The beer will have a dry coffee bitterness and a full white creamy head.

Typical examples: Murphy’s, Beamish and of course Guinness.

“How could I not brew an Irish dry stout?  Although I grew up near the borders of Cork, which has two of it’s own stouts, Guinness was still the drink of choice.

During the summer, bottles of stout were served up to the workers to wash down their sandwiches before they returned to baling the hay. My brother and I, who had been drafted in for the day, soon dealt with any remnants left in those bottles!

Although my tastes may have moved on, a bottle of dry stout still brings back memories of sunny days, warm hay, and many, many blisters from stacking the bales on the trailer. The best bit of all was sitting on top of the bales, on a fully stacked trailer, as my dad drove back to the barn, while up above we ducked the branches of the trees that hung over the road and put our faith in the flimsy construction of hay below us. I’m sure it wasn’t as idyllic as I remember it but a bottle of stout still makes me feel like I’ve done a good days work, even if all I’ve done is mow the lawn.”

Is the Irish Dry State available in Norwich?

Yesterday i had a pint of this with lunch at The Castle on Portobello Road in London.
If i don’t like a beer, i can never tell whether that’s due to the lack of keeping and serving standards of the particular pub (it definitely didn’t have the full white creamy head as stated above). Or if it’s because i just don’t like the brew. I found this one flat, too chocolaty and sour. As typical examples: Murphy’s, Beamish and Guinness were mentioned here. To me just the color is similar.

    Hi David/Nev

The body is a bit lacking, we wanted to make it much drier than our Oyster Stout, which we have managed to do, but I think at the loss of a some mouthfeel and body.
Glad you enjoyed the others though.

I was really spoilt at the weekend in the Lord Nelson at Southwold,
Firstly the Adnams Extra was on and bang on form,Well done Fergus.
Then i was able to try the Adnams Dry Irish Stout,
Which i personally thought was ok but not as good as the Oyster Stout.
There is plenty of dark chocolate flavour along with suggestions of fruit.
Though i did think the stout was a lacking a bit of body,
And as David has pointed out it does drink more like a mild,
A bit of tinkering with the ingredients next time should put that right.

Sorry, Fergus, but I find this the first of your International Beers that doesn’t quite work.

It seems much too thin in flavour for a stout, maybe more like a mild. I have heard most other drinkers/tasters say the same, so you will obviously be aware by now.

Perhaps it would be worth trying it again next year, as I know Adnams can do it and would like to see more cask stout on the bar in Suffolk.

You can be sure we will.

I have just received two Firkins of your stout, which I have just tapped. We look forward to drinking this in a couple of days time. I hope it is as good as your Champion IPA, which was excellent, please brew some more soon.

The Cattawade Crown in the Street, Cattawade, Brantham just across the Essex boder near Manningtree, bases it’s ales on all the Adnams Product. This year alone, apart from the best Best Bitter we’ve had the Champion IPA, Lighthouse, Old Ale, Gunhill, Explorer, Oyster and now the Irish Dry Stout has arrived. We prefer not to take the stronger beers to ensure a steady throughput and steady customers. But, boy some of us are looking forward to some more Extra!

    Sorry, Champions Pale Ale.

  • Tim Meston

Please could you tell us who takes delivery of your monthly guest beers so I can go those pubs and sample them. So far I have only managed to taste the Champion IPA (at the Greyhound in Ipswich before Christmas) – it was champion.
