Adnams American Style IPA

Adnams American Style IPA

Available in selected outlets.

Recreated using a Californian yeast strain, pale ale malted barley, along with some Munich malt, Crystal malt and malted wheat. This will provide the biscuity backdrop to the big American hops. A blend of five American hops, Columbus, Chinook, Cascade, Centenial and Wilamette gives our beer a deep citrus bitterness with a fragrant citrus/floral aroma.

Typical examples: Goose Island IPA, Stone IPA, Anchor brewing’s Liberty Ale

“America might have started out replicating beer styles from the rest of the world but they have moved far beyond that and now their beer styles are influencing the rest of the world. I think their take on the original English India Pale Ale is the most successful. It’s may be slightly odd to recreate a version of a style that was originally exported from these shores, but I love the smell of hops and an American IPA is a showcase for citrus hops. They are big, bold, some might say brash, but, to my mind at least, beautiful.”

We are waiting for some to come back from bottling currently, not sure on the quantity, but we’ll announce it on Twitter or Facebook when they are available.

    Thanks

Great beer, but I’d love to see Adnam’s produce a traditional English IPA. I do like my hoppy beers, but always preferred the more complex mixture of hops and malt associated with the English version.

A pint of Broadside by the coast in Southwold is still hard to beat though!

Thanks Karl, glad you liked it. We will be doing a version in bottle as well in a few months so hopefully you’ll get to try that as well.

    Cheers

I discovered this 2 days ago at my local Wetherspoons (George @ Whittlesey) of all places. Definitely had to be tried out as one of my fellow CAMRA commitee members hails from the States and I knew he would be jealous! Very drinkable and a contender for regular beer.

John/Nev Glad you liked the beer. We are working on a beer for the Autumn which is based on this one. Can’t give any more details yet but I think you’ll like it.

American IPA is (was ?) a wonderful beer. As it has a very different character to the standard Adnams beers, it must be a candidate for regular (or at worst seasonal) availability. Like one of the other correspondents I only found it at the Chelmsford beer festival, where it was my beer of the festival. Far more impressive than the other 2009-10 seasonal beers.

As i missed out coming to Southwold to try the American Style IPA,
It was a real bonus to find it at the Chelmsford Camra Winter Beer Festival.
I really beleive that this is the best beer in the world range so far.
The aroma was not as intense as i thought it would be,
But on tasting the beer it has bags of beautiful citrus hop flavour.
And a very pleasant dryish bitter finish.
    Overall a lovely balanced beer.

IPA can be found at Rumsey Wells, St Andrews Street; King’s Arms, Hall Road; Tafford Arms, Hall Road; World’s End, Mulbarton and slightly further afield, The Angel, Larling. Let us know if you need any further suggestions.

Still trying to find it! Is there anyone in (or near) Norwich that has it?
Horse & Dray didn’t get this one; nor Mustard Pot. Couldn’t find it in Southwold; been and gone at The Star, Wenhaston.

Is this going out through any wholesalers? Waverley say they’re not stocking it and they are my usual source for your beer!

we are using spring barley (variety called Tipple). It’s a very good malting barley and gives a nice base but with the amount of hops we’re putting in I wanted a bigger malt/biscuit flavour to balance it.

What sort of Pale malt do you use?
With Munich in the mix for some extra maltiness I’d assume you use Pearl Barley.
