Adnams Ghost Ship 4.5% ABV

Adnams Ghost Ship

Adnams Ghost Ship

Adnams Ghost Ship is part of our Permanaent Range available all year round on draught and in bottles.

Ghost Ship is a ghostly pale ale which takes its inspiration from Adnams 600-year-old haunted pub, The Bell.

As well as having its own resident ghost, The Bell sits in one of England’s most haunted villages, Walberswick, where George Orwell famously spotted the spectre of a small stooping man, prompting a lifelong interest in ghosts. Walberswick’s shore is littered with the eerie wrecks of smuggling ships, much like the one on the pump clip. And just out to sea, now under the waves, lies the ghost town of Dunwich. Previously one of England’s biggest ports, Dunwich was washed out to sea in 1286.

Legend has it that the bells in the church tower can still be heard ringing on calm winter nights…

This beer has good assertive pithy bitterness with a malty backbone and a lemon and lime aroma. Ghost Ship is brewed with a selection of malts – Pale Ale, Rye Crystal and Cara. We use Citra, and a blend of other American hop varieties, to create some great citrus flavours.

I was very fortunate to taste Ghost Ship on draught in an old haunt in Holland Park, London, last Autumn before attending a concert at the Royal Festival Hall.  It was quite superb and it was wonderful to have a pint in an old-fashioned handle glass.  The only drawback was that it was so drinkable that I had to pull myself together and get on the tube otherwise the concert would have been missed.  i  have been looking for this pint ever since.  So pleased to see that is becoming more easily available.

Hi Richard. It’s great to hear that you love Ghost Ship. Sadly I couldn’t find any pubs in your area stocking it at this time. We hope you enjoy your brewery tour and get to enjoy some more Ghost Ship whilst you’re in town!

  • Richard

Perfection! – The essence of idyllic, sunny Southwold in a glass. Ghost Ship’s travelled 200 miles to Derbyshire from The Lord Nelson and wow, this is a cracking pint! We’re back down in three weeks for the week and planning to do the brewery tour too – only two pints left and it’s by the board - oh no :( Does your inventory show any takers near to DE56? Cheers Adnams and our compliments to Fergus. R+S (Belper)

Ghost Ship will be available in bottles for a limited run during September and October. It will be sold in all our Cellar & Kitchen Stores and online for home delivery.

  • Sarah Howe

We’re glad you enjoyed Ghost Ship. It’s available until the end of October so you still have a couple of months to make the most of it!

  • Guest

Lovely lovely pint. Hoping it becomes a regular, and that the Fox and Anchor in Smithfield hasn’t sold out when I go back there tonight.

  • Sarah Howe

I’m afraid it isn’t at the moment. However, The Three Chimneys (TN27 8LW) does take our beers so maybe you could suggest to the Landlord to try Ghost Ship……

  • Kjdiamond2000

is ghost ship available in the tn27 area?

  • Sarah Howe

Hi Peter, we glad you love Ghost Ship. Other pubs serving it within walking distance are the Lord Nelson in Southwold, The Bell in Walberswick and The Randolph in Reydon.

  • Peter wylie

amazing beer – even better than my beloved explorer! – would love to see this as a permanent addition to the adnams stable. I am on holiday in southwold and am writing this in the Swan hotel bar but i can only find ghost ship in one pub in southwold – the sole bay.

  • Mark Hannant

Tried it yesterday at The Bell. Superb ale. Loved it.

  • Chris

What a lovely ale, had my first taste of this yesterday. I hope this will eventually be available all year.

  • Sarah Howe

Hi Maria, I would recommend trying the Railway Bell EN4 8RR but i would suggest that you call them first as they took delivery of Ghost Ship 10 days ago so they may not have it on tap anymore. Their number is 020 8449 1369.

  • Bigfoot

Thanks Sarah.  Fergus did indeed get in touch.  I’m extremely grateful for the info / response… I look forward to tracking down some bottles from September too :-)

  • Sarah Howe

I’m glad your such a fan of Ghost Ship! I will ask Fergus, our head brewer to get in touch with you about recreating it. I’m afraid we don’t have any outlets offering Ghost Ship in the Reading area but the bottled version will be available from September for a limited run.

  • Bigfoot

Hi Sarah, I’m a massive fan of the Ghost Ship and also plan to have a crack at brewing something similar.  So any advice on hop-schedule would be massively useful… I’ll be picking up a few bottles and/or heading out to a pub serving it near Reading to compare the efforts too :-)

  • Sarah Howe

We’re glad you like Ghost Ship and good luck with recreating it. We will be offering Ghost Ship in bottles for a limited run in September if you want to compare your efforts. And if you want any brewing advice just get in touch!

  • Dave-o

I had a pint of this at the weekend.  Really good stuff!
Luckily i have just ordered some Chinook and Citra from my hop supplier so will have a bash at making this myself when it’s no longer available in pubs.

  • Sarah Howe

    Hi Shaun.
Fergus, our Head Brewer, says “There are currently no plans to definitely bring back Nut Brown or Fishermans on cask for a limited run. However, Gunhill is essentially a brown ale and is available in bottle and cask if that helps.”

  • Shaunharris2

Any chance Adnams could brew 1 of their old brown ales for a ltd release in kegs please?

  • Sarah Howe

Thank you for your kind comments on our seasonal brews. Ghost Ship will be available in bottles in September and October this year as a limited release.

  • Shaunharris2

Ghost Ship along with Regatta the best ales in their range. Is Ghost Ship really coming out in bottles at the end of the year?

  • Sarah Howe

Hi Sam, There are no pubs in the IP7 area serving Ghost Ship I’m afraid. Your nearest pub serving this beer is The Greyhound, 9 Henley Road, Ipswich, IP1 3SE. I would recommend giving them a call first to check it’s still on tap. Their number is 01473 252862

  • Sarah Howe

  • Sarah Howe

Ghost Ship will be available in bottles later this year.

  • Richard

Tried this beer yesterday at the Suffolk Show, very impressed. Is it available in bottles?

  • Sarah Howe

Hi Chris – I’m afraid there are no pubs in the Northamptonshire area serving Ghost Ship at this time.

  • Sarah Howe

Hi Terence, I’m afraid a trip to Norwich may be in order as this is where your nearest pubs offering Ghost Ship are. Mulberry (NR2 2PE), Trafford Arms (NR1 3RL) and The Bell Hotel (NR1 3QB) have all taken deliveries of Ghost Ship – please contact them to check it’s on the pumps.

  • Sarah Howe

Hi Bo – The nearest pubs stocking Ghost Ship in EC1 postcode are all JD Wetherspoons pubs. They are Moon Under Water (EC2H 7LE), Hamilton Hall (EC2M 7PY) and Green Man (EC2R 8EJ)

  • Bo

Great, any pubs stocking Ghost Ship in the London EC1 area?

  • Sarah Howe

  • Terence Hills

Tried this at the Angel last year and was very impressed. Do you have a list of current outlets?

  • Mary M

I tasted Ghost Ship in York last week – wow, I think you may have a beer that will appeal to the ladies too! The aftertaste reminded me of a Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. Can’t wait until we can buy it in bottles.

  • Fergus

glad you liked it, Ghost should be back as a seasonal beer again next year

  • Pedro

Was in Birmingham on business and dropped into a couple of pubs looking for a pint of Broadside but was disappointed not to find any.

FOund Ghost Ship at the airport on the way home and had a couple of pints. Then found out the plane was delayed…a couple more Ghost Ships made the wait much more bearable.

  • Sean

I am glad you enjoyed the Ghost Ship, unfortunately this is only available in the UK.

  • yagil

hi ! i was touring london for the first time last week (israel) with my wife. as part of the experience i’d tried as many ale’s as possibly. luckily for me, i ran into your ghost ship ale … WOW … by far the tastiest of them all.
unlickily .. visiting the same pub (tottenham) later i was told they ran out of it.
    do you ship abroad?

  • Tim

I felt compelled to comment on Ghost Ship after a half in Wetherspoons last night – wow!

I find a lot of hop-led bitters, especially light ones, only concentrate on the bitter aspect of the hops – this is a great example of a balanced hop flavour, with the citrus and fruit working together with the bitterness and the other flavours of the beer – really great, and something I could drink more of!

I personally think that the new Adnams beers are a great move, and perfectly demonstrate skilled craft brewing in the UK. Now, if we could get some more of the international and seasonal beers in Birmingham, I would be very happy!

  • Fergus

Cheers Richard, glad you enjoyed it and I’m sure you mean wrecked in a completely responsible sort of way. :)

Adrian, No plans to bottle it yet, but it has gone down very well so who knows.

  • Richard Cranium

Oo blimey. Went to the local Wetherspoons yesterday and found their Beer Festival was on. Came across Ghost Ship. So scrummy I got absolutely wrecked on it. (If you’ll excuse the inadvertent pun.) I can still taste it this morning. I’m tempted to go back for more and I’ve not had my breakfast yet.

@Marty “Bitter and Broadside is all we need” – you sup those mate, and I’ll sup your Ghost Ship.

  • Adrian

Will this be avilable in bottles?

  • Sean

    Andrew,

No Adnams Ghost Ship should be clear.

    Regards
    Sean

is it meant to be cloudy

  • Chris

To lunch at Normanton on the Wolds (deepest Nottinghamshire) today – good food, as always, added to by a total surprise – Ghost Ship! What a wonderful beer: beautifully bitter with a sweet, citrussy edge. I love all of your beers, but this one really is special.

  • Sean

    Marty,

Thank you for your feedback, hopefully I can explain some of the reasoning behind what we are trying to achieve.

As peoples tastes change and we have to keep pace with that. It’s not something new, Bitter was made to satisfy a demand for a Bitter style cask beer when Mild ale lost it’s following. Broadside in cask came along in the 1980′s when the interest in cask beer grew and we needed to offer another beer.

There is a market for new beers but we do need to be careful not to forget about the beers that people have grown to love.

I think the pace of change is probably quicker now with more and more breweries starting up and the ready availability of beers and raw materials from all over the world. Bitter and Broadside are beers that people know and love us for but newer drinkers don’t always share that view.

    Thanks again
    Fergus

I fear that with all these new products you may become ‘jack of all trades’ – Bitter and Broadside is all we need.

  • Sean

    Tom,

I have now added a list of current stockists, pdf format.

  • TomC

What pubs is/will this be available in?

  • http://www.dmchire.co.uk James RG

Can’t wait for this, if it tastes as good as the pump clip looks then we’re in for a treat!
