Adnams Sole Star – 2.7% abv Pale Amber Ale

Adnams Sole Star 2.7% abvSole Star is our new 2.7% abv ale with a light floral / citrus aroma, gentle caramel notes and a good level of bitterness. It’s brewed with Pale Ale, Crystal, Black and Munich malts and Chinook and Cascade hops.

Fergus had a terrific response to his ‘Would you drink a 2.8% abv beer’ post in August. From over 50 comments, the majority of you said yes, you would be happy to drink such a beer, so we’ve spent the last few months working on a full-flavoured yet lower abv style.

As well as benefiting from a reduced duty rate because of its low abv, it’s ideal as a lunchtime pint for the responsible drinker.

Fergus Fitzgerald and Sole StarFergus explains how he selected the malts and hops to create Sole Star: “The Black Malt helps give a good depth of colour, and the Munich and Crystal Malts give the beer its depth and body as well as some toffee notes. The hops – Chinook and Cascade – were used as they are good bittering hops with attractive citrus characters yet are not too aggressive or harsh. The aim was to create a lower abv beer with all the taste and body of a standard strength ale.”

Some drinkers will also be pleased to know that in addition to having the lowest number of alcohol units per pint of any beers in the Adnams range (1.6 units per pint), Sole Star also has the fewer calories at 80 calories per half pint.

Sole Star is named after the brightest star in our sky – the sun – which rises first over the East Coast and the Sole Bay Brewery each morning. Sole Star will be available in cask only at selected outlets from Monday 5th December.

If you try it in one of our pubs, we’d love to know what you think.

Great beer! Please put it in bottles!

This is an outstanding, full flavoured pint from one of my favourite breweries.  Was worried the lower ABV might leave it tasting a bit thin but to be honest if I hadn’t known it was 2.7% and you’d asked me I would have probably guessed it was at least 4%.  Very tasty indeed and brilliant for having a couple of pints at lunchtime without writing off the afternoon.

Have been drinking Sole Star at the Maids Head in Wicken, Cambs this week. Great stuff, wonderfully hopped. Can’t believe it’s only 2.7%!

    Yes!!
I love ale, am passionate about ale and am greatful for ale for the survival at my free house pub! My only gripe with ale is that if you drink too much you get drunk! That might sound stupid or it may not. I love the sound of this ale and am looking forward to it being on at my pub!

Hi Shaun, it’s great to hear you enjoyed our new beer.
We would need to evaluate the popularity of the beer on a wider scale and over a longer period of time before we can make a decision on whether to put it in mini-casks or to bottle it. So fingers-crossed!

Tried Sole Star today at the Trafford pub in Norwich have to say what a great brew it is.Hard to believe that is 2.7% tastes like a stronger ale.Is there plans to bottle it or have it in mini kegs?

  • Lorrainebland

It sounds great – looking forward to trying it. Glad you didn’t go for a mild style.

As we have only just released this beer we first need to see how successful it becomes before we can pursue other additions to the product line. If it is successful then we will bottle it and possibly offer it in mini-cask too.

  • Adrianlockwood

morning, will you be bottling this beer at all.
